Advent Stories: Priorities

As I reflect on memories of Christmas past I can't help but see how the meaning of Christmas has evolved for me into an entirely different focus. I believe as we age, our ideas change considerably. What once meant so much: the presents, the excitement of children, the wonderful meals, and of course the house decorated so beautifully, don't seem to be so important as when I was younger.
The once merry time for giving gifts, practicing goodwill, just for a season, seems not to be so important, as the fact that we are mortals and someday will go into the realm of immortality. I'm sure that the death of my dear friend Phil has made me more aware of my priorities in life. How we deal with life each day is the most important way to see if we are behaving as Christians should.
I question myself about whether I appreciate what I have. Do I live each day as if it were my last? Do I really love others in the way Jesus taught? Do I really do as Christ instructed: "Feed my lambs"? Will I do what I can to help others or am I more interested in the days of yore, when decorating a tree or impressing others with gifts meant so much?
The true meaning of Christmas is the birth of that tiny baby over 2000 years ago which changed everything for us. Because of His birth, we can find forgiveness, and love ourselves as well as others. This means never having to be alone, because Christ resides within us.
I've often wondered what Mary and Joseph felt like on that night, the eve of Christ's birth. I'm certain they were afraid. but how amazing must it have been to play such a significant role in the birth of that precious Christ child.
As we make preparations and go step by step through the events which define the season, how will we feel this Christmas season? Will we hustle around, decorating, cooking, and buying many presents? Or will we give the gift of love to someone who really needs it? Will we step out of our comfort zone and invite someone into our homes or lives who are lonely, different, or just need a family to share this precious time with?
Jesus Christ our Lord did not go with tradition, but traveled in circles which were different. He ate with sinners and undesirables. He showed us how to love unconditionally.
Our Lord made a difference in our lives. This year as we prepare for the Advent season, let us remember how Jesus would want us to celebrate His birth. Let us redefine, hope, peace, joy, and love.
