An Observation on Service

Here's something that stayed with me. Maybe you noticed it, too.

Bailee was at the FCC Facebook group trying to fill out the Saturday schedule for Faith Quest's NIBROC fundraiser. Mike Lewis responded that he could take over at 4, but he might be a little late because he's scheduled at NIBROC until four. Now, we know why Mike is working at the fair. He's manning the booth to raise funds for the Corbin Community Backpack Program.

The next day, Bailee was back looking for someone to fill the last open slot on Thursday at two. Robert Bales jumped in and volunteered, although he warned he might be a few minutes late because he's working at the First Baptist food bank until two. Who knew?

It takes a lot of people working together to man a fundraiser like this, and kudos to everyone who signed up ahead of time. But this little observation illustrates what I've been told before: "If you want something done, give it to a busy person."

There are certain people who want to spend their free time making the world a better place. When there is a need, they are ready to jump in and fill it. Even when they are tired. Even when they've already "done their part." Even when no one will notice.

You probably know people like this, even if you don't know all the good they are doing. They are living out a portion of Jesus' words from the Sermon on the Mount, specifically Matthew 6: 1-4. Yet if it comes up, they will tell you from experience that it's more than just following orders, and they don't need recognition. Helping others is the surest way to make yourself happy.

By the way, parking by donation at NIBROC raised $1,463 for our Faith Quest program! Thanks to all who helped out, and special thanks to Bailee for going the extra mile to make sure everything ran smoothly. Faith Quest begin on Wednesday, September 2, at 6PM. Invite all school age children you know, because this year is going to be special!
